chapter four of ten · a feeding pair

centering gives motion form

centering condensing

the held middle lets movement take shape: around a steady center, motion condenses into form.

· emergence
something new arrives

what arrives meets motion already taking shape.

around a held center, movement has been condensing into form. into that shaping, something arrives, and it arrives at a workable moment: the clay is on the wheel, still turning, still open to what comes.

dawn arrives on a world mid-making. the form was underway before the arrival, and the arrival becomes part of what the form will have been.

in plain termssomething new is arriving while things are still taking shape, and there is room for it in the shape.

&
· threshold
the balance reaches its tipping point

the balance tips, and the form sets.

a balance reaches its tipping point where motion has been taking form around a center. the tip is the setting moment: what was becoming, is. one instant the shape could still be otherwise; the next it holds.

lightning is the sky's own sudden setting, charge become form in a stroke. the center held through the tip, which is why the form that set is true to it.

in plain termsa change has tipped, and what was becoming has set into what it is.

&
· coupling
each shapes the other

each shapes the other, and a form grows between them.

each shapes the other around a steady middle, and the shaping condenses: what passes between them takes form. the form belongs to both; neither could have made it alone, and it shows both their hands.

aurora is two fields' exchange made visible. the pair works like hands on one wheel, and the vessel rising between them is the relationship, given walls.

in plain termstwo things are shaping each other, and something with real form is growing between them.

&
· boundary
an edge forms

an edge forms, and the shape knows its outline.

motion has condensed into form around a center, and now an edge forms: the shape gains its outline. the outline is the form's own claim on the field, the line where it begins.

the horizon gives the day its vessel. a form with an edge can be held, filled, and known; the outline is what the making was moving toward.

in plain termswhat was being made has an outline now, and can be held and known.

&
· yield
pressure meets no resistance

the shaping gives under pressure and keeps its center.

pressure arrives against a form still taking shape and meets no fixed opposition. the surface gives where it is pressed, the way working clay gives, and the center goes on holding the whole.

cirrus streams and the sky keeps its depth. the give is part of the making: what pressed has left its curve in the form, and the form is more its own for carrying it.

in plain termspressure is leaving a curve in what is being made, and the making continues around it.

&
· settle
the field finds its level

the finished motion rests in its form.

the field finds its level where motion has taken form. the turning slows, the shape stands, and everything the movement was is now held.

dusk sets the day's work in its final light. form is how motion rests without being lost; the stillness is full.

in plain termsthe work of shaping is done, and what moved is now held in a form.

&
· return
something comes back

what comes back finds a form where there was motion.

something comes back to a field where movement has condensed into form. what it left as swirl it finds as vessel; the energy it remembers is all still here, standing.

the moon returns nightly to a shaped world. the form holds the history of its own making, and the return can read it there.

in plain termssomething is coming back to find that what was in motion has become something solid.
